Jamshedpur : Change is the only constant in life. But even after years, banners and posters remain the unsurpassed medium for political campaigning.

HT met some of the Jamshedpur's top printers to get a peek into the changes that this unsurpassed mode of campaigning has gone through in terms of designing and printing material. "Election banners and posters might be primitive but the medium is the most effective for election campaign", said Salim of Steel Printers.

He added that over the years, parties have demanded additional colours and effects on the government -approved design to make the banners, posters or flags catchy. "However, the printing matter is given by the party and is not tampered with."

According to Salim, during elections there is an increase of profits by around 10% to 15%. He also said, "Work is completed within two to three days from the date order and bills are reimbursed by the election office," he added.

Printers also pointed out how cotton has been replaced by Chinese flex , making the material used eco-friendly.

"a, we used to print on cotton material but the rising price of fabric has pushed us to flexes, which are cheaper," said Anwar of Sunflower printers who feels that flexes affect the environment but then again they are the only alternative.

Getting a bit nostalgic Anwar said that since childhood he has felt that the election flags, posters or banners are not only beautiful to look at but are also the best way to appeal to the masses during elections.

Sunflower Printers approximates increase in profits by 10% this time. Printers also offer free advice to their customers, that is the political parties, and in this way also forge relations with them. "We always suggest to political parties to keep their print matter clutter free. Three important things should be kept in mind - simple language, spacing and readable fonts. The campaign message should be audible," said Haradhana Pramanik, head of Kailash Printer.

He feels that giving away some advice always helps forge better relations with the customers. He added, "Banners, flags and posters will never lose their importance as they are easy to carry, cheap and can be printed very soon in bulk."

Once the candidate are announced and independents file their nominations, order would flow in and competition would be cut-throat.
