Why is the media behind the Yakub Memon hanging?
Yakub
Memon was a chartered accountant who was involved in the 1993 Bombay
blasts. The blast was one of the deadliest terror attack that took
place in India.
Some
say he did not have a greater role in the attack whereas majority
believe that he was the “driving spirit” of the attack. The
hanging of Yakub was the first death sentence that was executed in
relation to 1993 blasts.
The
1993 blasts killed around 257 people and more than 700 people were
injured. In 2014, the Supreme Court of India confirmed the death
sentence awarded to Memon by a Terrorist and Disruptive Activities
Act court. Later on, Memon gave a mercy petition, which was rejected
by the honorable president – Pranab Mukherjee.
But
still, Yakub had a great faith in our Indian judiciary as he believed
that he was innocent and he was suffering for the deeds of his
brother – Tiger Memon. Well, still we the citizens do not know what
was his actual involvement.
But,
as the true citizens of India, we should abide by the law and orders
of the Supreme Court and should respect them. Yakub was given a death
sentence after a crucial analysis of the evidences that were against
him.
His
last mercy plea was also rejected by the President and the Supreme
Court in the morning wee hours of July 30. Yakub was made to wake up
at 3 AM. He took his bath and read the Quran . He did not allow the
doctors to examine him as he believed that he is perfectly fit. He
was hanged around 6:30 AM at the Nagpur jail with a tight security
around him. After the conduction of the post-mortem, his body was
flown to Mahim in Mumbai wherein he was buried at the Bada Kabristan.
Now,
let's come to the point. Why is the media giving so much of
importance to such a convict. He was hanged because of his deeds.
Let's accept that fact.
Today,
even Kalam Sir was buried in Rameswaram. But, very few media channels
focused more on the honorable ex-president. A huge crowd attended the
mass funeral of Memon. So what?
Yes,
it was a good step by the media to inform the citizens that a convict
has been hanged. But covering his funeral or going to the depth of
the entire issue, does not make any sense. There are much more
important news or incidents that are taking place across the nation.
I
also do not understand, what's wrong with the people? I read one of
the article on a news site, wherin one of the resident of Mahim
stated that, “I want to see a last glimpse of Yakub?” Have the
people gone crazy? Till the day before Yakub was hanged, people
screamed for a fair judgment stating that he deserves a death
sentence.
What
happened now? Is it a sort of sympathy? If so, then for what reason?
For killing many innocent people?
I
would love if the media becomes a bit more sensible and give
importance to the news that needs much more attention. The hanging of
Yakub is a lesson for all the aspiring terrorists of our country.
I
have a lot of respect towards each and every judgment of Supreme
Court. Let us help our country to produce more Kalam's rather than
producing Yakub's.
